Reasonable Accommodations Requests

We want to pass on information on how to submit a request for Reasonable Accommodations. This information may be especially relevant given the widespread office moves occurring across NASA Goddard and the unsubstantiated changes to the implementation of the Agency’s telework policies. This is information from the Goddard Disability Program Office as shared with a GESTA member:
What is Reasonable Accommodation?

Reasonable accommodation refers to any change or adjustment to a job or work environment that enables an employee with a disability to perform essential job functions, or to ensure equal access to employment opportunities.

Who is Eligible?
Any employee or job applicant with a disability, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), is eligible to request a reasonable accommodation.

How to Request an Accommodation?
  1. Initiate a Request: Employee notifies supervisor, HR, or the Disability Program Manager (DPM).
  2. Documentation: You may be asked to provide medical documentation to support your request
  3. Interactive Process: Collaboration: a) Engage in a dialogue with your supervisor and DPM to identify potential accommodations ; b) Evaluation: DPM/HR/Equal Employment Opportunity  office reviews the request, assesses the needs, and determines feasible accommodations.
  4. Decision & Implementation: A decision is made, and the agreed-upon accommodation is implemented in a timely manner.

Examples of Reasonable Accommodation
  •     Flexible Work Schedules
  •    Ergonomic Workstations (note that it is also possible to get ergonomic workstations without a Reasonable Accommodation)
  •     Assistive Technology
  •     Modified Duties or Responsibilities
  •     Remote Work Options
